SMB Diver Distinctive Specialty
Who should take this course?
PADI Instructors who have special scuba diving interests and expertise can write their own specialty diver courses known as Distinctive Specialties.
Surface marker buoys (SMBs) allow scuba divers to mark boundaries for mapping or search and recovery, alert boat traffic, or provide a line as a visual reference for ascending divers.
Any diver who wants to learn how to safely deploy an SMB should take this course. This course also serves as a good introduction to the PADI Search and Recovery course where you'll learn to work with lines and lift bags.
What will you learn?
During two dives, learn the proper techniques and protocols for using surface marker buoys and delayed surface marker buoys (DSMBs) in the local area.
How long is the course?
You work on the knowledge development at your own pace to complete it prior to the in water sessions.
The dives are typically conducted in one day. However, we can schedule the dives to a time that suits you.
What scuba gear will you use?
Beyond using basic scuba equipment, you’ll require an SMB or DSMB and reel.
Ideally, it's best to have your own gear as you want to be able to tailor the configuration for your comfort and needs as you gain more experience. But don't worry if you don't, we can provide all the specialist equipment or even fit you out in a full set of gear.
